Copilot's Manifesto

"To the barricades!"


My version of Microsoft Word now prompts me to try Copilot every time I open a new document so today I finally thought what the heck and typed (of course I did): "I want to persuade healthcare managers that the way to improve patient flow is to provide hospital doctors with data on length of stay."

Here's what Copilot wrote:

Some comments from me.

The first paragraph began with mainly platitudes, although its last sentence ("When hospital doctors have access to this data, they can make informed decisions that not only improve patient outcomes but also streamline the overall functioning of the hospital.") was promising.

The second paragraph also had a good last sentence. I liked the bit where it said "freeing up beds for new admissions". Weirdly, it's not second nature for healthcare managers to make the connection between length of stay and freed-up beds, so this definitely felt like a step in the right direction.

Things got even better in the third paragraph. I hadn't expected it to say anything about a culture of transparency and accountability, so that was a bonus. And the idea that length of stay data "encourages collaboration among multidisciplinary teams, as they work together to develop strategies that minimize hospital stays without compromising the quality of care", well, I'm not ashamed to say that I'm going to steal that.

And the final paragraph, well, it almost made me want to dig out a Les Misérables costume, steal a musket from somewhere and storm the barricades! "Empowering." "Transforming." "Driving significant improvements." Blimey, there was even a semi-colon!

Look, I know I'm being a bit starry-eyed here. I'm sure my AI honeymoon will be over soon. But for the moment, I'm somewhere between 'pleasantly surprised' and 'impressed'...
